Roseanne Funston stepped up last meet to take on the role of Toastmaster of the Evening – basically playing MC for the night, describing what was going to happen, introducing speakers, providing segues between various sections etc. For a first time, she did a fantastic job imploring us initially to ‘Listen Learn and Laugh’ – excellent priorities for Toastmasters.
Top Table Toastmasters then saw new members John Reghenzani and David Funston give their icebreaker speeches. Icebreaker speeches are designed to let the audience get to know them better as well as practise the speech principles of using introductions, a body and a conclusion.
John gave a heart warming account of his life centering it around the two loves of his life which everyone felt was delivered in a sincere and touching manner. David gave a very entertaining speech about his unwillingness to tackle many issues in his life. His structure was by and large excellent and he managed to weave his theme cleverly throughout the speech. He did need to address the looseness of his conclusion but the speech was enjoyed by all.
The last speech of the evening was delivered by guest Mt Sheridan member, Celia Berrell. Her speech titled ‘Beauty and the Breast’ captivated the audience with its true scientific undertones, humour and charming delivery.
Brigitte Daley ran a Table Topics section which continued her Masterchef theme. Celia delighted and surprised the audience with her response which is detailed in an earlier post.
Celia delighted and surpised the audience with her Table Topics response which included the following poem.
Don’t Eat Concrete
by Celia Berrell
I think we’ll make a concrete cake.
It doesn’t need to oven-bake.
It cooks itself and gets quite warm
when curing to its dry hard form.
We’ll need to scoop and stir and fold
ingredients in a mixing bowl.
Cement and sand and gravel make
the contents of a concrete cake.
Cement’s a powder coloured grey
that’s made from limestone, gypsum, clay.
Just like a cake’s self raising flour
it gives our concrete sticking-power.
The sand’s a bit like sugar-grit
and gravel’s like the dried-fruit bits.
By adding water to the mix
we’ll make a sludge that slops and sticks.
When poured into a frame of wood
the concrete keeps the shape it should.
We’ll pat it flat and water it
until it’s cooked and dried and set.
When cured that slab is hard and tough
so don’t go falling on the stuff.
Our teeth and concrete shouldn’t meet .
it’s not a cake for us to eat!

Programme 7 Jun 2010
Top Table Toastmasters had a great day at the Millaa Millaa markets today.
Toastmasters Anne, Nicky, Kaj, Rod and Brigitte set up a promotional stall in order to let the region know that Toastmasters is keen to once again have a strong and vocal presence in the area and that we encourage interested people to come along to our meetings.
Both Kaj and Rod gave speeches – Kaj giving his speech that won him 2nd place in the Division International contest about the lessons we can learn from Peru.
Rod delivered his very funny speech about Cousin Lionald’s Ride, describing how he and his brother sought to ‘break’ their cousin from the city by setting him upon one of their goats for one helluva ride.
Brigitte orchestrated a wildly entertaining Masterchef Skit which had the crowds enthralled.

Raffle tickets were sold in a fantastic hamper prepared by Jill Morris from Simply Hampers. Jill is a member of Mt Sheridan Toastmasters Club which is the sponsoring Club for Malanda’s new Club.
Lots of people bought tickets and the hamper was won by Mel who I’m sure was delighted to win the wonderful selection of gourmet chocolates, nuts, peanut brittle and wine. Money raised from this raffle will go towards educational resources for the new Club.
As well as meeting lots of locals we were most pleased to meet Mayor Tom Gilmore and Councillor Rhonda Sorensen and we hope to see lots of you at our meetings in the near future.
Top Table Toastmasters will be holding a promotional stall at the Millaa Millaa markets this Saturday morning. So if you would like to know more about what Toastmasters do, please come and have a chat. We would love to meet you!
Three of our members are going to provide speeches from 9am. Brigitte Daley, Rod Sheather and Kaj Haffenden will deliver speeches. Some are pure entertainment, one is more inspirational.
We will also be selling tickets in a wonderful raffle prize prepared by Jill from Simply Hampers with wine and choccies. Proceeds will go towards educational resources for the Club.
Look forward to seeing you there!!
It has been decided at this point to hold the meetings on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month as this seems to suit most members better.
Let us know what you think!
The first demonstration meeting for Top Table Toastmasters (TTT) took off last night with some exemplary performances demonstrating what people can achieve when given a nurturing forum in which to practice their public speaking skills.
Brigitte delivered a memorable thought of the night noting that in order to really test one’s mettle we need to see how they operate in positions of power. Table Topics took on the form of a debate led by Christine as to the efficacy of daylight saving. Much frivolity ruled the business session as Nicky took us thro’ a ‘play’ form of how to run a business session.
Rod Sheather gave a fantastic performance in his telling of the tale about his ‘Cousin Lionold going for a ride’. It was a speech littered with incredibly descriptive and humorous word images that had the audience both enthralled and in stitches.
David Knox delivered a commanding speech also showing catchy word usage about his own life story and Kaj showed us all why he won the Division evaluation contest by providing an excellent appraisal of both David’s speech and the meeting.
A wonderful night was had by all! Please join us for the next meet and come and see what Toastmasters can offer!
